Captain’s Log, Stardate 58468.9: The Clarke is dying. About ten standard hours ago, the Clarke passed through some manner of energy field which immediately stripped the ship of power. We suddenly dropped from warp and the ship continued, in a slow tumble, with E-space velocity of almost 0.05 C.

The engineering and science team have been running themselves ragged devising ways to generate electrical power… and I’ve allowed myself the luxury of tapping a small amount of that to power a tricorder for this log. The crew has been gathered to the cores of the primary and secondary hulls to consolidate warmth and put as much distance as possible between us and the rapidly cooling hull. The out lying compartments are already inhospitable without hostile environment suits.

It’s a race against time… and we’re falling way behind. Unless one of our staff has a brainstorm to generate massive amounts of power, we’ll all be dead within a day. Commander Tate has asked me if I’d like to try and charge up a distress beacon, but there’s little point. Out here in the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, we’re months from any kind of aid.

Moments ago someone ran me message from Dr. Grss’Sss. It tells me that several of the psionically sensitive among the crew have been reporting that they sense a nearing mental presence – a group of maybe twelve decided alien minds. I’ll get down there and ask first-hand questions as soon as I’m sure the ship has safely passed by this deep space debris field we’ve come upon. At our current velocity and with no navigation deflectors, one hit could easily vaporize the entire ship.

I will make an updated log entry if there is time… and if we’re still here. Captain Mozyx, out.

The answer lies between the lines in "Among the Shepherds".

Shit - Star Trek should have done such stories like this.

Its rather moving, deep, desperate. The power of space once again yielding its influence, and the pitiful power of rank and command has no sway.

Aside of that piece - and its BLOODY well written, this is an excellent image and I love the model here. Never liked the glowy Buzzard scoops and grills, and look at her without it - more real.

Excellent lighting and detail.

Great work

Think the crew should perish - to show that space is dangerous and to be respected.

Well the story did continue with this piece...

They did get out of it.... but at a heavy (non-recoverable) cost.

It's gratifying that you and others have enjoyed what I've been trying to do with my loose lil' Clarke story/voyage. And from those like yourself who've chimed in, it seems like there's a lot of Trekkies who wish the show was about real SF on the Final Frontier, as opposed to far-future super-heroic soap opera. So thanks so much for the comment and support!

"it seems like there's a lot of Trekkies who wish the show was about real SF on the Final Frontier, as opposed to far-future super-heroic soap opera"

F***ing hell, I thought I was the only one. Nice to know that some exist. I am sorry, but I like my Sci-fi to be like Sunshine, Silent Running, Alien, 2001, or Bladerunner - deep, human, flawed yet important.

Sorry if I sound anal, just me.

Thanks - oh and I did read it. Again moving. Should do a proper novel, no BS and I think it would be a great read.

Thanks my friend :) and its a pleasure :D

Just have - and I will admit - Drell 7's work is stunning stuff!

Yes we must before it disolves into Sci-fantasy BS!
