Captain’s Log, Stardate 58469.4: The crew continues to recover from our near disastrous contact with The Web. Yesterday’s memorial service for those crewbeings lost was… how do humans say?... heart-wretching? It should not have been me guiding that mourning, but Captain Mozyx. The whole crew feels his loss… and also immeasurable gratitude for his leading the attack teams against The Spiders, saving the ship and allowing us a means to recharge the key ship’s systems. Chief Engineer Rassth’t has to monitor the implanted “Spider pumps” around the clock, but they continue to supply our energy needs. Most ship’s systems are back to almost 90% functional strength.
After our encounter with The Spiders, we were all alarmed when our sensors lit up with more contacts that seemed to be spaceborne entities. But what we ultimately encountered was a pleasant surprise. The beings seemed curious but wholly benevolent. After an initial contact, we slowly engaged our impulse drive to move along. As we moved these creatures kept pace with us. We do not know if it was by instinct or curiosity, but their behavior reminded us of the dolphins of old Earth who would playfully guide sailing ships through the ocean waters. We eventually named this species The Shepherds.
Once we reached .27 C, The Shepards seemed unable – or unwilling – to keep up. But our brief peaceful contact with them has helped buoy the crew’s lagging spirits.
Captain Green-One-Right, out.

interesting tale in the ships logs at first look at the picture the logs fills out the idea behind it very well. one would say the description in the log go hand in hand with the picture that it described. nice. it also at first glance reminded me of a hidden map in the game freelancer (you have to cheat to get to it since the 3 systems it spans is full of deadly radiation) I forget the name of the system but those "shepards" look similar to the shapes in the space systems I found.
Any resemblance is coincidental In most cases I've started with a rough a concept, illustrated it, then created some text to fit the illustration. So it's a kind of wiggly, organic, back and forth process.
Like any Federation ship, it's all mixed. Why do you ask?

Love the ship, a superb design, well detailed and respectable. I love the entities too - true alien beings.
Good story too, full of modest emmotion, pace, drama. To remind us the glories, disasters, and purpose of space travel.
Its rare to come across something you are looking for and find.
I am litterlay speechless but its nice to know that some care about the idea of traversing the stars.
Thank you.
