Back in the olden days, when Mac displays were in B&W and Usenet forums were all the rage on college campuses, me and my buddy Tom (Drell-7 [link] ) were starving SF artists trying to put food on the table by making art for RPGs. Chief among those was Traveller.
Our biggest joy was always craft design. After we both saw the cool illustrative work in the Japanese version of Traveller, we decided to refine/define one of the game's core adventuring ships - the Type A2 Far Trader - by tweaking it with anime-inspired sensibility. The sketch above is the result of that collaboration.
This image is an un-inked pencil image, but is what we both consider the definitive image for the ship. I've published it elsewhere ([link]) but we offer it up here in higher res for those interested in taking it into a paint program and colorizing the image with your own custom schemes. All we ask is that you drop us a note when you post the results so we can get to see what you did with it.
I always loved your version of the Far Trader. It looked really cool and very original. It did not look like a knock off of the Milenium Falcon, like the original design did.
Much as I admire Bill Keith's illustrations and designs, he did do a lot of "component swipes" from Star Wars and Galactica I actually designed this from the far trader blueprints that were released a year or so before we ever saw Bill Keith's drawing. Then I further refined it with Tom Peters after we both oogled the japanese release of Traveller.
You should submit this to Marc. The artwork is has for T5 looks pretty shabby compared to this.
Traveller5 will be published this December. He ran a Kickstarter in June. He was hoping to raise $24,000, ended up raising $295,000, so T5 is coming to a game store near you.
