This is a just completed commission based on story background by John Lester of Starship Modeler [link] . His adventures focus around the the colony transport ship, the James Cook (aka "Cookie"). The ship, about a mile wide sphere, is FTL capable and covered almost completely in a fine outer layer of regolith and ice. Two giant counter-rotating centrifuges spin around the central axis. Here one of Cookie's transports approaches the hanger bay (and yes, the hanger bay IS huge - big enough to pass a 747) as Cookie hides in the Maxwell Gap of Saturn's rings.

As my 3D modeling skills are almost non-existent, I used some basic techniques to make these vehicles. Cookie almost entirely a sphere sculpted with bump, displacement, and texture maps. The transport is a crazy kitbash of geometry and textures from other artists, but employed to meet Lester's design spec (he described the transports largely as shipping containers with rocket motors). Some of you may have fun playing "name that part"... almost like picking out the Tamiya tank bits on the Millennium Falcon :D

Rendered is DS3, postworked in Photoshop. Cookie and all it's relevant details are copyright John Lester.

This one is quite well-done. The highlighted hangar area of the Cookie is a real touch of class, and an eye-catcher. The ship is well rendered and effective. Great work with the background, too.

Thanks, bud. A lot more time than usual went into this one. But that's part for the course when I take on a commission ;)

Thanks. I'm not sure it came out 100% what I wanted, but it's got it's own merits that keep me going back and looking at it.
