If I recall correctly, the original cover had the Enterprise hovering just over an airless planet, with figures in spacesuits "beaming down" right under the secondary hull. In that pic, the Enterprise looked to be about the size of the Archer class(?!!) Talk about artistic license...Cool pic, until you realze she's supposed to be closer to CVN-65 in length, not a World War One four-piper destroyer. Oh, well. As far as that goes, the cover for the first volume had flaming exhaust coming from the warp nacelles and shuttlebay. Today's artists (and art directors) tend to be much greater sticklers for accurately portraying the book's contents, thank goodness! Ditto for you, Arcas!

I really liked those original covers. They were less representational and more.... just capturing a feel of SF mystery. I look back on 'em fondly! But i like mine too ;)

Hmmmm ... I'm having a really hard time with this one, and I'm not sure why. I like the idea, and I like the image POV, but adding the cover info to it throws it off for me, esp. the pink text, even though I realize it picks up color from the image. Also the way the text overlays the shuttle, and everything appears squeezed into the space defined by the vertical lines - it just doesn't seem to be balanced, or maybe it's too balanced - I'm not sure which.

I know I'd dig this image as a stand-alone (I love the palette in the art itself, and I might like to see it cropped a bit differently), but this cover, for some reason, doesn't 'sing', to me, like the previous ones.

Y'know, I tweaked the colors this morning, but some some reason DA won't let me upload and replace. So I figured I'd try again when I got home from work.

That ST# masthead graphic can be tricky to work around. It's so large that it becomes an integral part of the composition. So... as I'd expect, some of these will work better than others. All I can do is hope that I haven't peaked ;p

I'd look at maybe bringing the shuttle closer and breaking the frame with it, maybe even on the right and bottom, to really emphasize its distance from Enterprise; bringing the camera in a bit would also put some space between the two vehicles without actually repositioning them, and then a bit of DOF on the shuttle would further involve the viewer. Did they use a tractor beam on the shuttle (I don't recall the specifics)?

Just thinking aloud ... ;) YMMV, and it may be pure shite :D.

Well I think I'll just move on and try to be a better lad in the future... though I may take your suggestion on "frame busting". Stay tuned. We'll see if DA lets me update it tonight????
