I recently did an audio interview with 3D Art Direct magazine – their first full interview for podcast. 3D Art Direct is a publication (print and web) dedicated to showcasing artists working in the 3D medium, primarily focusing on the scifi and fantasy genres. It's refreshing that it covers not only established names in the field, but spends at least as much space on providing a showcase for up-and-commers. As a result you get perspectives from all skill levels.

My podcast interview with them just went live, late last week. 3D Art Direct editor Paul Bussey grills me about a variety of subjects, from my faux Trek book covers and Spy Girls series to comparing workflows in the 2D vs. 3D mediums and tips on effective 3D figure work. I haven't yet listened to the final product. I'm sorta working up the courage… but I was there for the original so I already know what we covered! At any rate I'd be interested to hear your thoughts… even if it is just to mock my nervous laughter…

You can find the link for the podcast, here: [link] . But be sure to check out the full range of the publication by visiting the main page, and subscribe to receive the FREE online issues: [link]

Yes - "FREE!" It's like being in Gene Roddenberry's cashless society!

And now, great art from others around the neighborhood! Click to see the originals:

  • Listening to: SOMA-FM
  • Watching: scurrying self-important primates
  • Eating: Too much TASTY food...
  • Drinking: Nature's version of bottled water

Thanks again Rob for your interview - greatly enjoyed it. It covered a lot of topics in that one session! Plus we had more material in the wings that wasn't covered, so hopefully another time.

The most memorable part for me was actually post to the interview as I started imagining thousands of Poser/Daz Studio artists around the world subconsciously working their facial expressions as they struggled to morph their character's face into the right position.

It was fun, Paul! I'd be happy to do it again, sometime.

Great pod cast - I'm not a pro like yerself, but I find a lot of similarities in the way we approach things, especially the serendipitous nature of our art, particularly this here 3D thang. I know that most of the stuff I post was never planned to look like it does in the end (really, only the posters and book covers even come close!); the tools allow us to experiment non-destructively, so in a sense, we really are working to our tools' capabilities and exploiting them to our benefit :). I was worried about that serendipity aspect, and whether I was actually being creative at all, but someone I respect, artistically, pointed out that regardless, planned or found, it's my own personal choice to follow the unexpected path, which is also a valid creative decision. WHEW! :D

Looking forward to Podcast 2.0 - the Karaoke Maneuver!

Heh - glad ya liked it, bud! Yeah, my evolution from 2D to 3D was long and strange. I had a few hangups to get over, but now I just can't see going back. I CAN see doing BOTH... but not forsaking 3D. The ability to "explore your subject" is, in my mind, one of the medium's biggest strengths. That and not having to worry about spending 3000 man-hours doing live subject drawings just to get a handle on realistic anatomy.

I like that phrase: "non-destructive experimentation"! :D

I really liked it, especially your comments about "happy accidents" when looking for a p.o.v. And your remarks on capturing human expression. I'd use a mirror for facial expression myself, if they didn't keep shattering on me....

Easy fix: stop banging your forehead against them, obsessively.

Web cam? :) They're built to take a lot of abuse, and no bad luck if they break :D.

Nervous laughter? I didn't notice any from you, think the interviewer was the nervous one imho.
